RVs on Dirt Roads: Routes, Weather, Proper RV

Jun. 14 2022 News By Campers RV Center

In part one of this two-part blog series, we went over some initial tips on ensuring your RV is prepared for any dirt road driving you'll be doing this season. It's common for RV owners to utilize their vehicles on various dirt roads and other areas that aren't pure pavement, and there are a few things you should be thinking about before and during any such trips.

At Campers RV Center & Powersports, we're happy to offer a wide range of new and pre-owned RVs for sale, plus expertise on many areas of use and maintenance for our vehicles. What are some of the other themes we recommend to RV owners who know they'll be potentially traveling on dirt roads for any upcoming trip? Here are several to keep in mind.

Consider Camping Apps for Route Planning

Especially if you're going somewhere you've never been, but even if not, it can be helpful to have a camping app or similar technology on hand for route planning. This is the 21st century, after all, and there are many different applications that can come in handy when traveling in an RV. A few of our favorites include AllStays Camp & RV, Campendium, and iOverlander.

Of course, a physical map can also come in handy, and we recommend having one on hand as well. Technology is great, but there's nothing quite like being able to see the whole picture all at once when planning your route.

Always Watch the Weather

If you know dirt roads are part of the equation for your upcoming RV trip, it's even more important to pay close attention to the weather forecast. These types of roads can quickly become dangerous in adverse conditions, and you don't want to get caught off-guard.

Before setting out on any dirt road journey, check the forecast and be prepared for anything that might come your way. This includes having the right supplies on hand in case you get stranded, as well as knowing your own limitations and those of your vehicle.

Choose the Right Vehicle

Not all RVs are created equal, and some are better equipped to handle dirt roads than others. If you know that dirt road driving is a possibility for your upcoming trip, it's important to choose the right vehicle from the start.

Consider factors like ground clearance, four-wheel drive, and tires when making your selection. A little research now can save you a lot of hassle down the road.

With the right preparation, dirt road driving can be a fun and adventurous way to explore the great outdoors. Just be sure to take the necessary precautions and plan ahead to ensure a safe and enjoyable trip for all.
