General Essentials

We’ll start with the accessories you really shouldn’t skip out on. This includes a drinking hose and a sewer hose to help maintain and properly use your water system. That first one in particular is a must-have: there’s no emptying your holding tank without it.

You may also want to invest in a water pressure regulator and a surge protector. When you pull into your campsite for the night, you’ll probably have a few hookups to make before you can enjoy all the amenities in your camper, like water and electricity. However, not all RV parks offer the kind of water pressure or wattage that’s good for your rig. The danger is if it overwhelms your systems, it can damage them. Water pressure regulators and surge protectors help mitigate this to avoid this problem, so you’ll want them installed, just in case.

Kitchen Accessories

Your kitchen can fill up with supplies very quickly and most of it is going to be necessary. Because of this, instead of cutting back on supplies, just try to be a little more proactive about saving space with smarter supplies. For example, if you’re going to use reusable dishes, find a stackable set so they take up as little space as possible. You can even find collapsible bowls to save even more space in your cupboards.

As a bonus tip, consider getting a cast iron pan for your RV. Sure, it’ll take up a bit of space and they’re not exactly cheap, but they are highly versatile and will last for a long time. You can stick them in the oven, keep them on the stove, or even place them over the fire. Not to mention, they simply make the food taste better.

Safety

One of your biggest priorities is going to be making sure everyone in your camping party is safe, whether you’re traveling alone or traveling in a big group. Hopefully you already have all your emergency supplies ready to go--fire extinguishers, survival gear, first-aid--but there are other ways to stay safe. Many RV manufacturers don’t create locks that are particularly different from one model to the next, so one set of RV keys can unlock multiple RVs. Before hitting the road, consider getting these locks changed out.

Your tires are an important part of safety and efficiency on the road, but you may not notice if one of them is losing air if you don’t inspect them regularly. For some, this means using a tire pressure gauge, getting on your hands and knees, and manually checking the tire pressure. However, if that’s not really your style, then we recommend investing and installing a tire pressure monitoring system. Newer RVs might have this anyway, but it can be an easy way to know immediately when one of your tires falls below the recommended psi and signal that something might be wrong.

This should get you started, but there are lots of other accessories that can help you have a more efficient, safe, and fun RV trip, each and every time. Just think about where you might be running into frustrations and see if there’s a tool or accessory that might be able to help. If you’re still looking for the right RV, like a travel trailer or fifth wheel, then stop by Campers RV Center and we’ll give you the full tour. We welcome all current and future RV owners from Shreveport, Bossier City, Ruston, and Monroe, LA, as well as Marshall, Longview, and Tyler, TX.
